Sister Key’s Eco-Heroes: 48 Volunteers, One Incredible Cleanup

Sister Key Cleanup: 4,453 Pounds of Debris Removed with Community Power!

On April 12, 2025, Sarasota Bay Watch led a major cleanup of Sister Key, bringing together 48 dedicated volunteers and several local partners, including Suncoast Waterkeepers, Mar Vista Restaurant, Reef Innovations, and the Town of Longboat Key’s Public Works and Police Departments.

The team—comprised of kayakers, boaters, shoreline walkers, and even golf carts—successfully removed a staggering 4,453 pounds of debris. This included 955 pounds of styrofoam insulation, 2,232 pounds of general trash, and 1,266 pounds of lumber.

Among the more unusual finds were a mini fridge, gas can with fuel, five couch cushions, a picnic table, a paddleboard, an air mattress, a box of unused laminate flooring, and even an American flag, which was respectfully sent for proper disposal.

This effort showcased the power of community collaboration and environmental stewardship. Much of the debris was sorted and repurposed where possible, including 12-foot plastic panels and municipal recycling bins. With the help of volunteers and local support, Sister Key is cleaner, healthier, and better protected for the future.
