May 17-19, 2016
The Florida Marine Debris Working Group convened a workshop in St. Petersburg on May17-19, 2016 to look for solutions to the marine debris problem in Florida. Marine debris takes many forms including lost crab, lobster or fish traps, derelict boats, fishing line, nets, ropes, buoys, hooks, weights, sinkers, anchors etc.
Ronda Ryan represented Sarasota Bay Watch for the third year and gave a presentation explaining SBW’s marine debris programs that are based on collaboration among many partners.
Among the organizations present at the workshop were: NOAA, FWC, DEP, Sea to Shore Alliance, Mote, USF, to name a few. Utilizing the experience and expertise of the attendees’ priority issues were identified and possible solutions discussed. The workshop goal was to create a draft plan for Florida Marine Debris Reduction. The primary areas of interest were: Emergency Response, Wildlife and Habitat impacts, Derelict Fishing Gear, Consumer Debris, and Abandoned and Derelict Vessels.
Over the last few years this networking opportunity has helped SBW to improve its process and methods to scientifically approach our local marine debris issues allowing us to expand this program into one of the main pillars for Sarasota Bay Watch and its partners.
