Kayaks On The Beach At Jim Neville Preserve

Fifth Annual Pineview School Cleanup of Jim Neville Preserve

May 14, 2016

On Saturday May 14, 2016 a group of about 25 Pineview students, parents and teachers cleaned up the Jim Neville Marine Preserve located in Little Sarasota Bay. The group was pleased to find that the Preserve was pretty clean, presumably because of their preceding four years of work. They were surprised to find pull-tab type aluminum cans that must have been on the island for decades.

The bay was gorgeous as the group enjoyed a kayak trip from the Conservation Foundation’s Bay Preserve across the bay to the Midnight Pass area. Once on the island, the trail was sometimes squishy mud, which brought squeals from the group as they navigated the narrow trails through the mangroves. Naturalist, George Tatge, provided a historical and ecological perspective about these islands that were built from dirt that was excavated to build the Intracoastal Waterway. Since their construction ecosystem have developed there including the rare salt barren type.

Special thanks from Sarasota Bay Watch to our friends at Pineview School, Silent Sports, SUP Sarasota, Tom from Pizza Hut, and the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast.
