This Saturday partners and volunteers came together to clean up Whitaker Bayou, removing debris from both the water and surrounding shoreline. The effort highlighted the ongoing challenges facing this urban waterway and the power of community collaboration to protect it.
Cleanup Results
In total, 1,001.4 pounds of debris were removed from Whitaker Bayou:
- Trash: 916.4 pounds
- Recycling: 76.0 pounds
- Fishing gear: 9.0 pounds
Fishing Gear & Wildlife Impacts
Volunteers recovered multiple pieces of derelict fishing gear, including cast nets, a crab net, monofilament line, and 11 lures. The consequences of this debris were evident when a 27-inch snook was found tangled in an abandoned net, reinforcing the serious threat lost fishing gear poses to marine life.
Notable Items Retrieved
Among the more unexpected items removed were a bicycle, half of a car bumper, a 6-foot ladder, vinyl flooring, a pop-up princess castle, a laundry hamper, a skateboard, and even a picture of Elvis depicted as a game character.
