Scallopalooza, It’s Clamtastic!
Scallopalooza, It’s Clamtastic, is our annual fundraiser for shellfish restoration in Sarasota Bay and has been sold out every year since its inception over a decade ago. Originally hosted at the Sarasota Yacht Club it was moved to the Sarasota Hyatt Regency due to space considerations where it once again sold out on February 15, 2020. Each year the funds raised at the event pay for multiple shellfish releases throughout the subsequent year, thereby sustaining our restoration efforts and increasing our chances for success.
Shellfish restoration is a core program of Sarasota Bay Watch. Scallop and clam population in Sarasota Bay has been drastically reduced over the years. Florida Fish and Wildlife experts believe that by raising shellfish in hatcheries and releasing the larvae into our local seagrass beds that a multi-year release program could result in a self-perpetuating local population.
Clams were added to our restoration efforts in 2017 and are now our main focus. Clams are more resilient to red tide than scallops and filter low levels of harmful algae. They can also live up to 30 years as opposed to a scallop’s one-and-a-half-year life span.
Special thanks to the sponsors and attendees who join together to ensure our local restoration continues through Scallopalooza, It’s Clamtastic. Our community knows “A Healthy Bay is Everybody’s Business.”
