Shoreline/Land Based Debris
Did you know that 80% of water-based trash comes from land? Removing it prevents it from entering our water. Shoreline cleanups protect habitats, improve aesthetics, and enhance safety. Sarasota Bay Watch has been a leader in regional marine debris removal, with areas chosen by need and open to all ages. Trash removal is necessary, satisfying, and a great way for volunteers to feel they have made a difference. Cleanups can be done by boat, kayak, or on foot, and volunteers collect valuable data on ‘hotspots.’ These events offer great community service and team building opportunities for organizations and businesses. Join our trash pickers for a satisfying day with visible results!

Underwater Debris
Underwater debris and “derelict” (abandoned/lost) fishing gear pose unique hazards to marine life. Animals such as turtles, dolphins, and birds can become entangled, often leading to injury or death. Discarded nets continue to “ghost fish,” trapping marine life indefinitely and damaging habitats like coral and plants. Sarasota Bay Watch conducts underwater cleanups of piers, bridges, jetties, and shorelines, where our certified divers and land-based volunteers collaborate to remove debris and collect data for scientific research. One of the most rewarding aspects of our efforts is releasing and saving entangled animals. These cleanups foster an informed, active community dedicated to improving local waterways and protecting native wildlife. Join us for an eye-opening experience!
