Discarded fishing line\, hooks\, and tackle left behind on bridges\, piers\, jetties\, islands\, and shorelines can entangle seabirds\, and marine life. For birds\, fishing line entanglement almost always results in death. Together\, we can remove these hazards before they cause more harm. A light lunch will be provided for all registered participants after the cleanup\, and students can earn community service hours for volunteering. Every piece of fishing line removed is one less threat to our coastal wildlife. Join us in making Sarasota’s waterways safer for the birds and marine animals that call them home! \n\n\n\nWe’re looking for:Boat Volunteers – Use your boat to help crews access islands\, shorelines\, and other areas that are difficult to reach from land.Kayak Volunteers – Paddle into shallow or hard-to-access locations to collect discarded fishing line and fishing gear.On-Foot Volunteers – Search bridges\, piers\, jetties\, shorelines\, and bird nesting areas for fishing line\, hooks\, lures\, and other hazardous debris.Fishing Line Collection Volunteers – Can’t stay for the event but know a spot that has fishing line? Come plant native flora\, improve local trails\, and remove marine debris to help restore our natural spaces.
