2026 Monofilament Cleanup
Saturday, September 19 @ 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Join us for the 2026 Monofilament Cleanup and help protect Sarasota’s coastal wildlife from one of the deadliest forms of marine debris! Discarded fishing line, hooks, and tackle left behind on bridges, piers, jetties, islands, and shorelines can entangle seabirds, and marine life. For birds, fishing line entanglement almost always results in death. Together, we can remove these hazards before they cause more harm. A light lunch will be provided for all registered participants after the cleanup, and students can earn community service hours for volunteering. Every piece of fishing line removed is one less threat to our coastal wildlife. Join us in making Sarasota’s waterways safer for the birds and marine animals that call them home!
We’re looking for:
Boat Volunteers – Use your boat to help crews access islands, shorelines, and other areas that are difficult to reach from land.
Kayak Volunteers – Paddle into shallow or hard-to-access locations to collect discarded fishing line and fishing gear.
On-Foot Volunteers – Search bridges, piers, jetties, shorelines, and bird nesting areas for fishing line, hooks, lures, and other hazardous debris.
Fishing Line Collection Volunteers – Can’t stay for the event but know a spot that has fishing line? You can still help! Collect discarded fishing line, hooks, lures, and other fishing debris during the week and drop off everything you’ve collected to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron during the event so it can be properly documented and disposed of.
Know Before You Go:
– Your safety is our number one priority! Wear heavy closed-toed shoes that can get wet like sneakers, water shoes, or boots to protect your feet.
– Opt for clothing that covers your arms and legs to ensure comfort and protection.
– Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and reduce waste.
– Don’t forget essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection.
– Use a dry bag to safeguard your valuables.
– Complete your online registration to secure your spot and stay informed about updates.
