On May 7, 2016 a dozen Friends of Red Bug Slough Preserve shared the morning cleaning up the Preserve. Sarasota Bay Watch joined the effort and provided bags, grabbers and gloves for the project. We found lots of plastic bags and bottles, some wood, a tire, a blanket, some fishing line and tackle, and a laundry basket full of books. It was a beautiful morning and it felt good to leave The Bug so much cleaner than we found it.
The cleanup was organized under the auspices of Keep Sarasota County Beautiful. Red Bug Slough Preserve was adopted by the Friends and will be cleaned up on a quarterly basis this year. Sarasota Bay Watch with weigh and measure the fishing line and debris found at the park and map the findings as part of its Marine Debris Initiative.
